  • Geek Retrospective : Babylon 5

Posted on September 3, 2013 by Tao

Watching Babylon 5 again, I have to admit that some of the gloss has come off. Don't get me wrong, the series is still a landmark in Science Fiction TV with it's series & season long arcs, tight storytelling and magnitude of the series.
Yet, some of what it did has now been done - better [...]

  • Geek Retrospective: Andromeda (TV Series)

Andromeda the TV Series (not to be confused with the galaxy) aired between 2001 and 2006 for 5 seasons and starred, among many; Kevin Sorbo. Yes, Mr. Hercules himself.  In fact, here's a picture of the cast and crew of Andromeda:

  • Pacific Rim Review

Posted on August 9, 2013 by Tao

Have you heard about Pacific Rim? If not, what rock have you been living under? This movie has been the talk of Geek Town for over a year now, and after finally catching it, I have to say - it's up to the hype.

Let's be clear - this is not a movie that will stretch your mind in any manner.  It's a big summer action blockbuster, it's just a big summer action blockbuster that's been engineered for geeks.  It's not smart, not innovative but it is very cool.  It's a big screen, live action Mechs vs Monsters and if you go in expecting that you'll love it.

Now for the spoiler discussion. Stop reading if you don't want some minor spoilers.

  • Fantasy Writers & Medieval Martial Arts

Posted on August 2, 2013 by Tao

It's strange. I'm reading the Incomplete Enchanter currently by L. Sprague de Camp and Fletcher Pratt.  It's not a bad series really, filled with short stories about Harold Shea (a psychologist) who manages to move himself to different, parallel worlds where the laws of science / magic alter depending on the worlds shared beliefs of [...]

  • Superman & the Dark Knight Returns

Posted on July 23, 2013 by Tao

So. Zack Snyder has reportedly confirmed the next Superman  movie will be based on the Dark Knight Returns.

    Let's list the issues here:

the Dark Knight Returns is a graphic novel about Batman.  Superman gets like 3 scenes...
It's a Batman novel.  The hero is Batman.  Superman is a putz and even Miller mentions that if this was [...]

  • Superman: The Man of Steel Review

Posted on July 5, 2013 by Tao

Superman-MOSSuperman is a very difficult character to write. The problem with Superman is simple - he's too powerful.  By definition, he's nearly unstoppable and often writers who deal with him have to write around why he wouldn't finish / complete / solve the problem in a few seconds.   Worst, because of his morals and genuine 'boy scout' demeanor, he's often unrelatable to many viewers - especially the younger, cynical generation.  He is a man out of time - except, unlike Captain America; he doesn't have the in-built excuse of being literally from another time. Superman: Man of Steel attempts to update Superman and in doing so, loses it's way and forgets who and what makes Superman special.

    Spoilers Ahead

In the Name of the King poster

We know of Uwe Boll right? The man who has somehow managed to make a career out of buying video game movie rights and the making bad movies from them? Well, if you've never seen a movie of his, consider yourself lucky.  He's generally a really, really bad [...]

  • The Wheel of Time Series: A Retrospective

Posted on June 21, 2013 by Tao

Missing 3 books! Missing 3 books!

Now that Robert Jordans’ (finished by Brandon Sanderson) Wheel of Time series is over, I figured I’d do a review of the series itself and give my point of view. Let me state that I started following the series when it first launched, ages ago and have followed it till completion. I should also state that I’m the kind of reader who will, with impunity and no sense of guilt skip tracts of description if I find them boring.

Obviously, some spoilers ahead. Continue Reading
