  • Little Brother - Book Review

Posted on September 4, 2014 by Tao

So, Little Brother by Cory Doctorow is probably the best Young Adult book I've read in a long time. It's set in an alternate reality modern day (or maybe just a little ahead of where we are) and focuses on Marcus's fight against 'Big Brother' once they take over San Francisco after a terrorist attack. Unwilling to trade his privacy for 'safety', the book chronicles his exploits and does a little teaching along the way.

  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier Review

Posted on April 18, 2014 by Tao

Okay, confession time. I'm a Cap fanboy. I've always liked him as a character when well written (see the entirety of Mark Waid's run); and so was looking forward to this movie. I have to admit as well that I wasn't that thrilled with Evans being cast as Cap, he just never won me over [...]

  • Novels of the Change: SM Stirling Book Review

Posted on September 18, 2013 by Tao

Started reading S.M. Stirling's Novels of the Change this last month.  I'm on book 3 right now and so far, I have to say I like it.
It's obvious the author knows something about martial arts, swordplay and general combat / tactics.  Whilst I'm not that interested in detailed fights, it's always nice to read a [...]

  • Book Review: Redshirts

Posted on September 8, 2013 by Tao

Ever heard of John Scalzi? No? If you haven't and you like humorous, tongue-in-cheek books that are well written and occasionally scratch the surface of some deeper subject matters, you'll enjoy his work.  Mind you - don't expect hard science fiction here; this is all soft scifi by far.
Redshirts is (somewhat) based on a well [...]

  • Geek Retrospective: Andromeda (TV Series)

Posted on August 12, 2013 by Tao

Andromeda the TV Series (not to be confused with the galaxy) aired between 2001 and 2006 for 5 seasons and starred, among many; Kevin Sorbo. Yes, Mr. Hercules himself.  In fact, here's a picture of the cast and crew of Andromeda:

  • The Wheel of Time Series: A Retrospective

Posted on June 21, 2013 by Tao

Missing 3 books! Missing 3 books!

Now that Robert Jordans’ (finished by Brandon Sanderson) Wheel of Time series is over, I figured I’d do a review of the series itself and give my point of view. Let me state that I started following the series when it first launched, ages ago and have followed it till completion. I should also state that I’m the kind of reader who will, with impunity and no sense of guilt skip tracts of description if I find them boring.

Obviously, some spoilers ahead. Continue Reading

  • Book Series Review - Chronicles of Elantra

Posted on June 5, 2013 by Tao

The Chronicles of Elantra is written by Michelle K. Sagara (aka Michelle Sagara or Michelle West) and is a fantasy universe revolving around Private Kaylin Neya, a young woman serving in the Hawks (a police officer) in a city ruled by a Dragon.  One of my favorite (and 'to buy') series right now, Sagara balances both the fantasy and character development aspects of her world very well.
